An ontology alignment expresses the correspondences between two, or more, ontologies. It can be the result of ontology matching or being established manually. The term ontology mapping is often used as an alternative to ontology alignment. However, due to the precise meaning of mapping in mathematics, it is preferable to reserve the term of an ontology mapping to a total, functional alignment. Alignments can be transformed into processable forms for the purpose of applying them to some problems such as ontology translation.
Ontology alignment is a part of the Semantic Web Topic Hierarchy. It was introduced in version 1 as described in History of the Semantic Web Topic Hierarchy.
